Signs It’s Time to Fix a Squeaky Floor

A little occasional noise from a wood floor isn’t unusual, especially as humidity changes throughout the year. But a consistent squeak usually means two pieces of the floor system are rubbing against each other.

Common signs include:

  • The same spot squeaks every time you step on it.
  • You can feel the floor move slightly under your foot.

Before You Start

The first job is figuring out where the movement is happening.

Most squeaks come from one of a few places:

  • A loose nail moving inside the subfloor
  • Two pieces of subfloor rubbing together
  • Finished hardwood boards rubbing against each other
  • A small gap between the joist and subfloor

If you have an unfinished basement or crawlspace below the squeak, you’re in luck. Fixing the problem from underneath usually allows you to secure the subfloor without putting holes through the finished flooring.

If there’s a finished ceiling underneath, you’ll probably need to repair the squeak from above.

Step 1: Pinpoint the Exact Location of the Squeak

Walk slowly across the noisy area and put your weight on different spots.

Step 2: Determine Whether You Can Access the Floor From Below

Check the room directly underneath the squeak.

An unfinished basement or accessible crawlspace gives you the easiest repair option because you can see the underside of the subfloor and floor joists.

Have someone stand upstairs and step on the squeaky area while you watch from below.

Use a flashlight and look closely where the subfloor meets the joist.

You may see:

  • Slight movement between the joist and subfloor
  • A small visible gap
  • An old nail moving
  • Two pieces of subfloor rubbing together

What You Should See: Ideally, you’ll be able to match the squeaky location upstairs with a joist or subfloor seam underneath.

If Yours Looks Different: If there’s drywall or another finished ceiling below the floor, don’t cut into it just to reach a minor squeak. Move on to repairing the floor from above.

Step 3: Fix a Small Gap Between the Joist and Subfloor

If you can access the floor from underneath and see a small gap between the joist and subfloor, a wood shim can stop the movement.

Apply a small amount of construction adhesive to a thin wood shim.

Gently slide the shim into the gap.

Do not hammer it in as far as possible. You’re trying to fill the gap, not lift the floor.

Push or lightly tap the shim until it feels snug.

Have someone walk across the area again while you listen.

What You Should See: The shim should sit firmly between the joist and subfloor without visibly pushing the floor upward.

If Yours Looks Different: If there isn’t a visible gap but the subfloor still moves against the joist, securing the two together with screws may work better.

Step 4: Secure a Loose Subfloor From Below

If the subfloor is moving against the joist, you can pull the two together with screws.

Choose a screw length that will securely enter the subfloor without reaching through the finished flooring above.

Use a screw specifically sized for securing the subfloor from below, making sure it cannot penetrate through the finished flooring above. If fastening at an angle through the joist, account for the angle when choosing the screw length and drive it slowly.

Test the floor from above before installing additional screws.

The exact method depends heavily on your finished flooring.

For carpet, you can often use a squeak-repair screw system designed to drive through the carpet and into the joist. These systems typically allow the screw head to break off below the carpet surface.

For hardwood, use a repair method specifically intended for finished wood floors. Specialized breakaway screws can be driven through a small pilot hole and snapped below the surface.

Do not drive ordinary deck or construction screws straight through visible hardwood flooring.

Whenever possible, locate the joist before installing the fastener.

A joist typically gives the screw something solid to grab so the flooring and subfloor can be pulled together.

What You Should See: After the fastener is installed, stepping on the repaired area should produce significantly less movement and noise.

If Yours Looks Different: Engineered hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, and floating floors require extra caution. Some of these floors are designed to move slightly and should not simply be screwed to the subfloor.

Step 6: Conceal the Repair in a Finished Wood Floor

If you used a breakaway screw designed for hardwood, the remaining hole should be very small.

Fill the hole with a matching wood filler or manufacturer-recommended repair product.

Use only enough material to fill the opening.

Wipe away excess before it dries, following the product directions.

Try to match both the color and sheen of the surrounding floor.

Walk across the repaired section several times.

If the original squeak is gone but another spot nearby still makes noise, locate that squeak separately rather than adding screws randomly.

The movement may be occurring between finished floorboards rather than between the subfloor and joist. Stop adding screws until you’ve identified what is actually moving.

Problem: The squeak changes depending on the season.

Wood expands and contracts as indoor humidity changes. A squeak that’s noticeable during one season and disappears during another may be caused by normal movement between wood components.

Problem: I found a large gap underneath the subfloor.

Don’t automatically fill a large gap with a thick shim. A significant separation could indicate a bowed joist, damaged subfloor, previous structural movement, or another issue that deserves closer inspection.
