Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Baseboards
You don’t necessarily need to replace baseboards just because they have a few scratches. Small dents, nail holes, and chipped paint can usually be repaired without replacing the baseboard.
Replacement makes more sense when:
- Sections are cracked, split, or badly damaged
- MDF baseboards have swollen from water exposure
- Pieces are missing
- The trim is pulling away from the wall in several places
- Previous repairs are obvious or failing
- You’re replacing flooring and want to update the trim at the same time
- You want to change the height or style of the baseboards throughout the room

Before You Buy New Baseboards
If you’re replacing only part of the existing trim, take a small piece of the old baseboard with you when shopping.
Baseboards that look almost identical on the shelf can have slightly different heights, thicknesses, or profiles. Those differences become obvious where the new and old pieces meet.
For an entire room, you have more flexibility. Common choices include:

- Solid wood
- PVC or composite trim for moisture-prone areas
Measure each wall and add the lengths together. Then purchase roughly 10% extra material for mistakes, angled cuts, and unusable ends.

Before You Start
If you’re replacing an entire room, take a few pictures before removing anything.

Step 1: Score Along the Top of the Old Baseboard
Run a sharp utility knife along the seam where the top of the baseboard meets the wall.
You’re cutting through the caulk and paint — not deeply into the drywall.
This step is easy to skip, but it’s important. If the baseboard has been painted or caulked to the wall, pulling it away without scoring the seam can tear drywall paper or peel a large section of paint from the wall.
What You Should See: A thin cut separating the top edge of the baseboard from the wall.

Step 2: Start Loosening the Baseboard
Choose an end of the baseboard, preferably near a doorway or outside corner where you can get behind it more easily.
Carefully work a putty knife, trim puller, or thin pry bar behind the trim.
Once you’ve created a small gap, slide the pry bar farther behind the baseboard.
Don’t try to pull the entire piece off from one spot.
Work your way along the wall a little at a time.

Step 3: Remove the Old Baseboard
Continue working along the baseboard until the nails begin pulling free.
If you’re removing a long piece, have someone support the loose end so it doesn’t snap or swing into the wall.
Once the baseboard is free, move it out of the work area.
Remove any nails sticking out of the wall or trim.
What You Should See: The bottom few inches of the wall will be exposed, usually with old nail holes and a visible paint or caulk line where the baseboard used to sit.
If Yours Looks Different: Don’t worry if some drywall paper comes off with the trim. Small damaged areas can be patched before the new baseboard goes on.
Step 4: Clean Up the Wall
Scrape away loose caulk, paint buildup, or chunks of drywall that would prevent the new baseboard from sitting flat.
Fill larger gouges if necessary and allow the repair to dry.
You don’t need to make the hidden portion of the wall perfect. Concentrate on anything that would interfere with the new trim.
Run your hand carefully along the wall afterward and make sure there are no old nails sticking out.
Step 5: Find and Mark the Wall Studs
Use a stud finder to locate the studs along each wall.
Make small pencil marks just above where the new baseboard will sit.
These marks give you easy targets when it’s time to nail the trim in place.
Most studs are spaced about 16 inches apart, but don’t assume yours are. Older homes, remodeled walls, and walls around doors can have different framing layouts.
Step 6: Measure the First Wall
Measure from one end of the wall to the other at the height where the baseboard will actually sit.
Don’t automatically use the floor measurement. Walls and door jambs aren’t always perfectly square.
Write down the measurement before walking over to the saw.
If the piece will run between two corners, determine what type of cut you’ll need at each end before cutting anything.
Remember:
- An inside corner turns inward
- An outside corner projects into the room
- A doorway usually ends with a straight cut against the door casing
Step 7: Cut the First Piece
Transfer your measurement to the baseboard and mark the cut with a pencil.
For a straight end, cut the board at 90 degrees.
For corners, you’ll usually need angled cuts.
If you’re using a powered miter saw, position the finished face of the baseboard correctly against the saw fence and keep your hands well away from the blade.
Cut slightly long if you’re unsure.
You can always remove another small amount.
You can’t put material back once you’ve cut it too short.
Step 8: Test-Fit the Baseboard
Place the piece against the wall without nailing it.
Check both ends and look along the top edge.
What You Should See: The baseboard should sit flat against the wall with the bottom resting evenly against the finished floor.
A tiny gap along the top isn’t unusual, especially if the wall isn’t perfectly straight. Paintable caulk will hide small inconsistencies later.
If Yours Looks Different: If the board rocks or leaves a large gap, check behind it for dried caulk, drywall compound, or another obstruction before changing your cut.
Step 9: Fit the Inside Corners
For a basic DIY installation, two 45-degree miter cuts can form a 90-degree inside corner, although coping one piece generally produces a better-fitting joint when walls aren’t perfectly square.

Step 11: Nail the Baseboard in Place
Once you’re happy with the fit, hold the baseboard firmly against the wall.
Drive finish nails through the baseboard at the stud locations you marked earlier.
If you’re using a nail gun, make sure the tool is sitting firmly against the trim before firing.
Keep nails away from the very ends of the board, where they can split the material.
For taller baseboards, you may need nails along both the upper and lower portions to keep the trim tight against the wall.
What You Should See: The baseboard should sit securely against the wall without noticeable movement when you press on it.
If Yours Looks Different: If one section refuses to sit against the wall, don’t keep adding nails. Check whether the wall bows inward or whether something is trapped behind the trim.
Step 12: Continue Around the Room
Measure, cut, test-fit, and install each remaining section individually.
Avoid cutting every piece ahead of time.

At doorways, the baseboard will normally end against the side of the door casing with a clean 90-degree cut.
Take your time as you approach the final pieces. Small measurement errors can accumulate as you work around a room.

If you installed the baseboard with a hammer, use a nail set to drive the finish nail heads slightly below the surface.
A properly adjusted nail gun may already leave them slightly recessed.
Don’t drive them deeply into the trim.

Fill the nail holes with wood filler or spackle appropriate for your trim.

You can also caulk very small gaps at painted corner joints.

Step 15: Sand and Paint
Allow the filler and caulk to dry according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

If you purchased pre-primed trim, you’ll typically only need the finish coats unless you exposed bare material while cutting or repairing it.
Once the paint dries, the new baseboards should look like they’ve always been part of the room.

Troubleshooting
Problem: There’s a gap between the baseboard and wall.
The wall may bow slightly. Small gaps along the top can usually be closed with paintable caulk. For larger gaps, gently press the trim against a stud and secure it there. Don’t force the baseboard so aggressively that it bows or cracks.
Problem: My inside corner has a gap.
The corner probably isn’t exactly 90 degrees. Test slightly different miter angles or cope one of the pieces. For painted trim, a very small remaining gap can be finished with caulk.
Problem: My outside corner doesn’t close.
Adjust the miter angles in very small increments. Don’t repeatedly shorten both pieces without checking the angle first.
Problem: I cut a piece slightly too short.
If it’s only a tiny gap and the trim will be painted, you may be able to fill it neatly. For a noticeable gap, recutting the piece is usually the better-looking repair.
Problem: The baseboard cracked when I nailed it.
The nail may have been too close to the end, or the material may have split along an edge. Move the nail farther from the end. Predrilling can help when hand-nailing solid wood close to an edge.
Problem: The new baseboard doesn’t cover the old paint line.
Your replacement trim may be shorter than the original. You can either choose taller baseboard or repair, prime, and repaint the exposed section of wall.
Problem: There’s a gap under the baseboard.
The floor may be uneven. Small variations are common and often aren’t noticeable once the room is finished. Larger gaps may require carefully fitting the trim to the floor or adding shoe molding.
