Signs Your Window Has an Air Leak

You don’t need to remove factory weatherstripping that’s still in good condition just because another section has failed.

Step 3: Clean and Dry the Surface
Clean the area where the new weatherstripping will be installed.

Allow the area to dry completely.

Step 4: Install the New Weatherstripping
Measure the section you’re replacing and cut the new weatherstripping slightly long.
Test-fit it before removing any adhesive backing.
Make sure it’s positioned where the window will compress it when closed.
For adhesive-backed weatherstripping, peel away a small portion of the backing and begin pressing the strip into position.
Work gradually rather than removing the entire backing at once.
Keep the strip straight and avoid stretching it as you install it.
At the corners, fit the pieces together neatly so you don’t leave a small gap where air can pass through.
Once installed, close the window slowly.

Step 5: Check the Stationary Joints Around the Window
If you still feel air after repairing the sash seal, inspect the stationary joints around the interior window frame and trim.
Look closely where:
- Trim meets the wall
- Trim meets the window frame
- The sill meets the frame
- Separate trim pieces meet
Small cracks can allow air from inside the wall cavity to enter the room.

Apply a thin, continuous bead of appropriate window and door caulk.
Smooth the bead so it seals both sides of the joint.
Don’t caulk over drainage openings or moving window components.

Step 6: Seal Larger Stationary Gaps
If you find a stationary gap that’s too large to fill neatly with caulk alone, don’t simply pump the entire cavity full of caulk.
For an appropriate larger gap, press backer rod into the opening first.
The backer rod should sit below the surface, leaving enough room for a proper bead of caulk over it.
Then apply caulk across the face of the gap.
This uses less caulk and usually produces a cleaner, more durable seal.
If Yours Looks Different: If removing trim reveals a large open cavity around the window, missing insulation, water damage, or deteriorated framing, you’re beyond a simple weatherstripping repair. Don’t blindly fill the cavity with caulk.
Step 7: Close, Lock, and Test the Window
Allow any caulk to cure according to the manufacturer’s instructions before disturbing the repaired joint.
Close the window completely and engage the lock.
Check that the sash still operates normally.
Then run your hand around the areas where you originally felt the draft.
Use the tissue-paper test again if necessary.
The draft should be gone or noticeably reduced.
Open and close the window several times to make sure the new weatherstripping stays in place and doesn’t bunch, peel, or interfere with the sash.
Finally, lock the window again.
The lock should engage normally without excessive force.
If you still feel a significant draft after sealing the obvious gaps, there may be air leakage behind the window trim or around the window installation itself rather than through the sash.
If Something Goes Wrong
Problem: The window won’t close after installing weatherstripping.
The replacement material is probably too thick or positioned where the sash doesn’t have enough clearance.
Don’t force the window closed. Remove the affected section and use a thinner profile or reposition it.
Problem: The window closes but won’t lock.
The weatherstripping may be preventing the sash from reaching its fully closed position.
Press gently on the sash while watching the lock alignment. If the lock works only when excessive pressure is applied, change the weatherstripping rather than forcing the lock.
Problem: The adhesive weatherstripping keeps peeling off.
The surface may have been dirty, damp, cold, or covered with old adhesive residue.
Remove the loose strip, clean and dry the surface thoroughly, and install fresh weatherstripping.
If the surface itself is deteriorated or heavily textured, adhesive-backed foam may not be the best option.
Problem: You can still feel a draft after replacing the weatherstripping.
Recheck where the air is entering.
The leak may be around the stationary trim or frame rather than the sash. Air can also travel through gaps hidden behind the trim and emerge somewhere that makes the sash appear responsible.
Problem: The draft is coming from between two window sashes.
Inspect the meeting rails and their existing seals.
Make sure both sashes are completely seated. On a double-hung window, the upper sash may have slipped slightly downward.
If the sashes don’t align correctly, address that problem before adding more weatherstripping.
Problem: You removed trim and found a large gap around the window.
A small accessible gap may be repairable with the appropriate insulating material, but large cavities, signs of poor installation, rot, or water damage deserve closer inspection.

Problem: The window itself is visibly warped or damaged.
