Signs It’s Time to Replace the Kitchen Sink Drain
A kitchen sink drain can last for years, but the basket strainer and its seals eventually wear out.

Your replacement doesn’t necessarily need to use the exact same mounting design, but it does need to fit your sink and connect properly to the drain piping below.
Check the replacement package to see whether plumber’s putty is recommended. Some sink materials and drain manufacturers call for silicone or another sealant instead.
Finally, inspect the drain piping below the basket. If the washers are brittle, distorted, or heavily stained from an old leak, this is a good time to replace them.
Step 1: Clear the Cabinet and Position a Bucket
Remove everything from underneath the sink so you have enough room to work.
Place a bucket or shallow pan underneath the P-trap and drain piping. Even though the faucet isn’t running, there will usually be standing water inside the trap.
If there is a garbage disposal nearby, unplug it before reaching around the drain plumbing.
Step 2: Disconnect the Drain Pipe
Find the slip-joint nut connecting the drain piping to the bottom of the basket strainer’s tailpiece.
Try loosening it by hand first. If it won’t move, use channel-lock pliers and turn it carefully.
Once the nut is loose, slide it down and separate the drain pipe from the tailpiece. Allow any trapped water to drain into your bucket.
What You Should See: With the pipe disconnected, you should be able to see the straight tailpiece extending downward from the basket strainer assembly.
If Yours Looks Different: A double-bowl sink may have a tee and additional horizontal piping connected beneath the drains. You may need to loosen more than one slip-joint connection to create enough movement to separate the piping without forcing it.
If the pipes won’t separate after the nuts are loose, don’t yank them sideways. Older plastic plumbing can become brittle. Loosen another nearby slip-joint connection if necessary to give the assembly more room to move.
Step 3: Remove the Old Basket Strainer
Look directly underneath the sink at the bottom of the basket strainer.
Most assemblies are held in place by either a large retaining nut or a locking assembly.
Remove the retaining hardware while supporting the drain from above if it begins to spin.
This is often the most stubborn part of the project.
If the nut won’t loosen, clean away visible corrosion and try again with large channel-lock pliers or a basket strainer wrench.
For a severely corroded metal assembly, the retaining nut may need to be carefully cut off. Take your time—the goal is to cut the old drain hardware without damaging the sink itself.
Once the retaining hardware and washers are removed, push the basket strainer upward through the sink opening.
If it doesn’t move, old plumber’s putty or sealant may still be holding it in place. Gently work around the flange from above with a plastic scraper or putty knife until the seal releases.
Step 4: Clean the Sink Opening
Remove all of the old plumber’s putty, silicone, grime, and mineral buildup from around the drain opening.
Clean both the top surface of the sink and the underside where the new washers and retaining hardware will sit.
The surfaces should be clean, smooth, and dry before the new drain is installed.
Don’t rush this part. Pieces of old putty or hardened sealant underneath the new flange can prevent it from sitting flat and create a leak.
What You Should See: The drain opening should have a clean, flat surface all the way around it without chunks of old sealant remaining.
Step 5: Install the New Basket Strainer
If your new drain calls for plumber’s putty, roll a piece between your hands until you have a rope roughly 1/2 inch thick.
Wrap it completely around the underside of the basket strainer flange.
Press the strainer straight down into the drain opening from above.
Some putty should squeeze out around the flange. That’s normal and shows that the putty is being compressed.
From underneath the sink, install the supplied gasket, friction washer, and retaining hardware in the order shown in the drain manufacturer’s instructions.
Different basket strainers use slightly different hardware, so don’t automatically copy the order from the drain you removed.
Hold the strainer centered from above while tightening the retaining hardware underneath.
Tighten it enough that the drain is secure and doesn’t move, but don’t overtighten it. Excessive force can distort washers or damage certain sink materials.
Remove the excess plumber’s putty that squeezed out around the flange.
If Yours Looks Different: If your drain manufacturer specifies silicone instead of plumber’s putty, follow those instructions. Don’t add plumber’s putty simply because the old drain used it.
Step 6: Reconnect the Drain Plumbing
Reconnect the tailpiece and drain piping underneath the sink.
Make sure each slip-joint washer is present and facing the correct direction. The tapered side of the washer normally faces into the fitting it seals against.
Start every slip-joint nut by hand.
The piping should line up naturally. You shouldn’t have to pull a pipe sideways or force it upward to make the connection.
If Yours Looks Different: If the new basket strainer sits slightly higher or lower than the old one, the existing tailpiece may no longer line up correctly. A different-length tailpiece or small drain adjustment may be needed. Don’t force misaligned plumbing together just to make the old parts fit.
Hand-tighten the slip-joint nuts, then snug them slightly with pliers only if necessary. Plastic drain fittings can leak when overtightened just as easily as when they’re too loose because the washer can become distorted.
Step 7: Test the New Drain for Leaks
Before putting anything back in the cabinet, dry all of the drain connections with a rag.
Close the sink stopper and fill the basin with several inches of water.
Leave the water sitting for a few minutes while checking underneath the basket strainer.
This tests the seal between the new drain and the sink.
If everything remains dry, open the stopper and let the full basin drain at once.
Watch:
- The basket strainer
- The tailpiece connection
- Every slip-joint connection you disturbed
- The P-trap
Run the faucet for another minute or two and check everything again.
Use a dry paper towel around each connection if you’re unsure whether you see moisture. Even a small leak will usually show up immediately on the paper.
If everything remains dry, the drain is ready for normal use.
If Something Goes Wrong
Problem: Water leaks around the basket strainer underneath the sink
The seal between the basket strainer and sink may not have compressed evenly, or debris may be preventing the flange from sitting flat.
Don’t try to solve a leak here by endlessly tightening the retaining nut. If tightening it slightly doesn’t stop the leak, remove the strainer, clean both surfaces again, apply fresh putty or the specified sealant, and reinstall it.
Problem: The basket strainer spins while you’re tightening it
Have someone hold the strainer from above while you tighten the retaining hardware underneath.
If you’re working alone, some basket strainers can be held from above with the handles of pliers positioned carefully inside the strainer openings. Avoid damaging the new finish.
Problem: The old retaining nut won’t come off
Corrosion can essentially lock old metal drain hardware together.
Try a larger pair of channel-lock pliers or a basket strainer wrench. If the nut is severely corroded, cutting the old retaining hardware may be easier than continuing to fight it.
Work carefully around stainless steel, porcelain, composite, or enameled sink surfaces.
Problem: The drain pipe doesn’t line up with the new drain
Don’t force it.
Compare the height of the new basket strainer with the old one. You may need a shorter or longer tailpiece, or the slip-joint piping may simply need to be repositioned.
A small alignment difference is usually DIY-manageable. Plumbing that requires cutting into glued drain lines or substantial rerouting is a different project.
Problem: A slip-joint connection leaks after reassembly
Make sure the washer is installed, isn’t damaged, and is facing the correct direction.
Loosen the connection, straighten the pipes, reposition the washer, and retighten the nut by hand.
If the old washer is hard, flattened, cracked, or distorted, replace it rather than trying to make it seal again.
