How to Replace a Dimmer Switch

Step 1: Remove the Existing Dimmer

Step 3: Disconnect the Old Dimmer

Once you’ve documented the wiring, disconnect the old dimmer.

Depending on the switch, the wires may be attached with terminal screws, wire connectors, or leads coming directly from the dimmer.

Loosen the connections carefully and separate the dimmer from the house wiring.

Inspect the exposed copper.

If a wire is nicked, damaged, or badly bent, trim and restrip it according to the strip length specified by the dimmer manufacturer.

Step 4: Connect the Ground Wire

Connect the new dimmer’s green or ground connection to the bare copper or green grounding wire in the box.

Tighten the connection securely.

Step 5: Connect the New Dimmer

Connect the remaining wires according to the instructions supplied with your dimmer.

For a typical single-pole replacement, you’ll connect the circuit’s line and load conductors to the appropriate dimmer terminals or leads.

If the dimmer uses wire leads, twist on the supplied or appropriately sized wire connectors until they’re secure.

Give each wire a gentle tug after making the connection. Nothing should pull loose.

Step 6: Carefully Tuck the Wires Into the Box

Fold the wires back into the electrical box rather than forcing the dimmer straight against them.

Keep wire connectors tucked toward the back and sides of the box when possible.

Gently push the dimmer into position.

Problem: The dimmer won’t fit back into the box.

Pull it back out and rearrange the wires. Dimmer switches are often bulkier than standard switches, so older or crowded electrical boxes can be tight.

Never force the dimmer into the box if doing so crushes the wiring or loosens connections.

Step 7: Secure the Dimmer and Wall Plate

Align the dimmer vertically and install the mounting screws.

Tighten them until the switch is secure, but don’t overtighten them.

Install the wall plate.

If you’re using a screwless wall plate, install its mounting frame first and then snap the cover into place.

Step 8: Restore Power and Test the Dimmer

Turn the circuit breaker back on.

Turn on the light and slowly move the dimmer through its full range.

The lights should brighten and dim smoothly without flickering, buzzing excessively, or shutting off unexpectedly.
